What happens at the gate when the network is down?

This is the honest version, because the gate is the one place where a hopeful answer costs somebody a real evening.

What does not work

Checking a code is a live check. The phone at the gate asks and gets an answer back. With no signal on that phone, there is no answer, so there is no check. We do not hold a copy of your codes on the guard’s phone for later, and we are not going to tell you we do.

What is not damaged

• The codes your residents already sent out are still good. An outage does not expire them.
• Nothing has to be re-issued afterwards, and no resident has to be told anything.
• The record catches up. Once the signal is back, checking works as normal.

What to do about it

Two things worth doing, and both are about the estate rather than the app. Put the gate on the most reliable network at that specific spot, which is often not the one the rest of the estate uses, and test it standing at the gate rather than in the office. And agree in advance, in writing, what the guard does during an outage, so the decision is made on a calm afternoon rather than by one man under pressure at the gate.

Does the guard need his own data?

The phone needs a connection from somewhere. Estate wifi at the gate house or his own data both work, and most estates that care about this put wifi at the gate.
